“What? Over? Did you say “over”? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no! And it ain’t over now. ‘Cause when the goin’ gets tough… The tough get goin’! Who’s with me? Let’s go!”  -John Belushi, Animal House
“If you’re goin’ through hell keep on going
Don’t slow down if you’re scared don’t show it
You might get out before the devil even knows you’re there
When you’re goin’ through hell keep on movin’
Face that fire walk right through it” -Rodney Atkins, “If You’re Going Through Hell”
“When a child learns to walk, he falls 50 times. He never thinks “maybe this isn’t for me” -Unknown
One concept some people lose growing up is the lesson of never giving up.  Giving up never occurs to us as children.  If there is something we want or want to do, we try our best.  If we don’t get it, we persist until do.  Children will focus on a problem until they solve it.  They learn to walk.  They concentrate on learning how to eat at a table correctly.  They ask for a cookie 5 times until they get it.   They learn to talk and communicate.  Children seldom give up after the first try.  Not even after several tries.  Thy just make attempts until they master that skill!
So what happens?  Why is it that, as we age, we say “forget it” after we hit a wall or challenge?  We set a goal.  We start on a great path and may even start to see progress.  Once it become difficult, we run the other way and give up.  I am not immune to this.  I have stopped pursuing many things that I really wanted after an initial setback.  I have given up after getting rejected by girls, cut from sports teams, and not getting promotions. Those setbacks sucked!  And, I figured that was the way it is supposed to be.   Looking back now, I realized I could have continued despite these obstacles.  I could have found another way and taken different approaches.  Obstacles come along to challenge us and make us better.  It is our responsibility to meet those challenges head on with an optimistic and “can do attitude”!
Maybe the road becomes difficult.  Maybe people discourage you.  Maybe you don’t believe it’s possible. Maybe you don’t have the resources.  What counts is how we handle these challenges in the moment.  Perseverance and persistence are skills that only a few seem to master.  But, they are available to everyone.  You’ve persisted before.  Ever go through a time where you got discouraged while working and wanted to stop?  Examples can include studying for tests, moving into a new home, finishing a project, or planning an event.   Obstacles certainly surfaced and you had to work toward them.  However, you knew it was important to keep working and see it done.  It’s critical to decide to focus and persist toward your goal DESPITE the hardships you face.  So, stop stopping and working on something else.  Stay the course until it’s done!
Consider this.  You’re not alone.  Someone on this earth has found themselves in a situation very much like yours.  Everyone has their challenges.  Out of the billions people alive today and even more who lived in the past, the chances are high that many others have similar experiences.  Those who do not give up overcome their obstacles and exceeded their goals.  Thats means that you can do it, too!  As Always, Eat, Move, and Improve!
